The Orton family came to California in the 1850s in search of a better life out west. They came to the fertile Central Valley for the many opportunities available only here. James Orton opened the first store in Lemoore, California during the late 1800s beginning a family tradition.
In 1906 he opened a store in the town of Stratford. That first store in Stratford sold everything a person would need for farming from dried goods and firearms to simple plows. After World War II, James' son refocused the business to sell the new generation of mechanized equipment from International Harvester. After five generations, Orton's Equipment continues to be a family business.
In February of 2020, the Orton family sold the farm equipment dealership to N & S Tractor who now operates the Stratford dealership location. The family still farms and ranches in Kings and Monterey Counties.
